Social Studies
Social Studies at the Intermediate Level
Fifth grade social studies will focus on all aspects of the United States. State Standard requirements include culture and society, economics, geography, government and civics, and historical perspectives.
The study begins with The First Americans, Exploration and Colonization, progresses to the Foundations of Freedom, Westward Expansion, Industrialism, and the Civil War. Finally, the year culminates with a study of the 20th Century as well as the first 4 years of the 21st.
Appropriate textbooks will be used to convey the concepts. Supplemental materials, i.e. workbook pages, audio texts, primary sources, videos, and teacher-designed projects will help students to capture and become proficient with state standards. Learning visually, auditorially, and hands-on should blanket all learning styles.
